It was just a little more than six weeks ago that disaster appeared to be all around for USA Basketball.

The team was preparing for this summer’s World Cup in Spain, and already, two of the top big men slated to participate — Kevin Love and Blake Griffin — pulled out. Then, the team suffered a stomach-churning blow with the devastating knee injury to Paul George, one of the most versatile players on the roster. That was capped by the withdrawal of the player who would easily be the best in the tournament, Kevin Durant.
